Day 1  Depart London Heathrow or regional airports.

Day 2  Arrive Beijing. Met on arrival by your driver and transfer to 4-star Novotel Xinqiao Hotel, or similar. (B)

Day 3  Early start today, visiting first the Temple of Heaven Park, where many local perform morning exercises such as tai-chi. Then view the Temple of Heaven itself, where emperors performed rituals to ensure good harvests. Afterwards visit the National Museum of China, one of China's best museums. After lunch, wwalk through Tiananmen Square before entering the Forbidden City, the centre of power for China's emperors for over 500 years. If time permits, we can go into Jingshan Park behind the Forbidden City and climb the hill for a bird's-eye view of the palace. (B, L)

Day 4 Today travel out of Beijing towards the mountains north of the city to the Mutianyu section of the famous Great Wall (about 1.5 hour journey). Not as crowded as some of the sections nearer the city, the wall at Mutianyu is impressive as it climbs up the mountain ridges. Cable car up to the wall. (B, L)

Day 5  Today start your day with a transfer to the Yonghe Gong, or Tibetan Lama Temple - the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in the capital and its most colourful shrine - and the starting point for your full day walking tour. Then walk along the 700-year-old Guozjijian Street, formerly Chengxian Street, that runs east-west and contains the Temple of Confucius, the second largest and dedicated to the famous educator and scholar. Continue onwards to the imposing Drum Tower. From the top of the tower there is an impressive view over the hutongs (alleyways) and siheyuan (courtyard houses). After lunch, walk through Yandai Xiejie, which used to be well-known for sellers of traditional pipes. Then continue to Yingding (Silver Ingot) Bridge that spans a narrow channel connecting Qianhai Lake and Houhai Lake. Explore some of the traditional hutongs and siheyuan surrounding the lakes. Transfer to the Silk Market for shopping opportunities before transfer back to hotel. (B, L)

Day 6  Free day in Beijing. (B)

Day 7  Transfer to airport for flight to Hong Kong (about 3-hour flight). Stay at the 4-star Eaton Hotel in the heart of Kowloon, or similar (B)

Day 8  Free day to explore Hong Kong. The efficient MTR metro system makes travelling around easy. Perhaps take the tram railway up Victoria Peak for classic views over the city, and don't forget the classic Star Ferry that plies the harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. (B)

Day 9  Free day until your flight back to the UK departing in the evening (B)

Day 10  Arrive UK early in the morning
