Shanghai - Guilin - Yangshuo - Hong Kong

Cookery class Li River, Guilin

Learn how to how prepare delicious Chinese dishes at unique riverside cookery school in the beautiful surroundings of the small town of Yangshuo in south-east China. Also visit Shanghai, Guilin, and exit via Hong Kong.



Day 1  Depart London Heathrow or regional airports.

Day 2  Arrive Shanghai. Met on arrival by your driver and transfer to 4-star or 5-star hotel. (B)

Day 3  Full day city sightseeing tour of Shanghai, to include the Yu Garden - a traditional house and garden in old China town district; the famous Bund or waterfront with its European-style former banks and trading houses; and the Shanghai Museum with its rich collection of art and antiques. Then take a boat trip on the Huangpu River that flows through Shanghai, giving you the best view of the city's modern striking skyline. (B, L)

Day 4   Transfer to airport for the two-hour flight to Guilin. Met on arrival and transfer to 4- to 5-star Grand Lijiang Waterfall Hotel. (B)

Day 5   Boat trip on the beautiful Li River past striking scenery of limestone peaks and rice paddy fields to the small riverside town of Yangshuo. Visit Yangshuo's busy market and main street. Stay at 4-star hotel or if you prefer a boutique guesthouse. (B, L)

Day 6   Start your first cookery class at the Yangshuo Cookery School. English-speaking teachers will take you to the market to choose ingredients and then teach you how to prepare delicious dishes with them. Eat your results for lunch! In the afternoon climb Moon Hill for panoramic views over the town and countryside. (B)

Day 7  Another morning at the cookery school learning a fresh range of dishes. Then in the afternoon visit the Silver Cave, a large cavern inside one of the karst limestone peaks that surround Yangshuo, where nature has created a mesmerising display of stalagtites and stalagmites. (B, L)

Day 8  Today enjoy a day trip away from Yangshuo, downstream of the Li River, to Huangyao ancient town. Here the old town has preserved many of its old buildings dating from the Qing Dynasty, with cobbled streets, bridges and temples. It is often used as a set in historical TV and film dramas because of its picturesque appearance. (B, L)

Day 9  Your final morning at the cookery school to improve your skills. Then in the afternoon, after lunch, take a leisurely walk along the riverbank to see daily life. (B, L)

Day 10  Transfer to Guilin West railway station for high-speed train to Hong Kong (journey time just over 3 hours). Transfer to airport for your overnight flight to UK, arriving morning of Day 11. (B)
