Take advantage of the 144-hour visa free transit policy for Shanghai and neighbouring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Explore vibrant Shanghai, elegant Suzhou, beautiful Hangzhou and the fascinating 'water town' of Nanxun before travelling on to Hong Kong.

Day 1  Depart London Heathrow or regional airports.

Day 2  Arrive Shanghai. Met on arrival by your driver and transfer to 5-star Ocean Hotel, or similar. (B)

Day 3  Today take a private city tour with your own local guide and car + driver around Shanghai, starting at the beautiful Yu Garden in the old town district. Explore the local bazaar before travelling to the famous Bund, or waterfront, with its European-style former banks and trading houses. Gaze across the river to the high-rise buildings of Pudong. Visit the Shanghai Museum, one of the best collections of Chinese art and antiques in the country. Then take a boat trip on the Huangpu River that flows through Shanghai, giving you the best view of the city's skyline. (B, L)

Day 4 Day excursion to the nearby city of Suzhou, famous for its classic Chinese gardens created by nobles and scholars, and its silk industry. Visit one of the best gardens - The Garden of the Master of the Nets - before moving onward to the silk spinning mill to see and learn about the production of silk. Then take a relaxing boat trip along Suzhou's canals in one of its most picturesque districts before returning to Shanghai. (B, L)

Day 5  In the morning transfer to railway station for the high-speed train to Hangzhou (about 45 minute journey). The prosperous and beautiful city of Hangzhou lies on the shores of the scenic West Lake. Take a boat trip on the lake. Then visit the Lingyin Temple, one of the largest and most prestigious Buddhist temples in China. End the day with a visit to a tea plantation that produces fine green teas on the slopes of the hills overlooking the lake. Learn about tea production and Chinese tea culture. Stay at the 5-star East Hotel, or similar (B, L)

Day 6  Day excursion to the "water town" of Nanxun, with houses lining canals crossed by stone bridges. Not as commercial as some of the other "water towns' nearer Shanghai, Nanxun has an impressive past based on its trade in silk. Visit some of the mansions that belonged to extremely wealthy merchants in the late 19th and early 20th century, such as that of Zhang Shiming which combines Chinese and Western influences. Visit Liu's Garden, a beautiful garden with extensive lotus ponds. (B, L)

Day 7 Pick up from your hotel by your driver and transfer to airport for morning flight to Hong Kong. Stay at the 4-star Eaton Hotel in the heart of Kowloon, or similar. (B)

Day 8  Free day to explore Hong Kong. The efficient MTR metro system makes travelling around easy. Perhaps take the tram railway up Victoria Peak for classic views over the city, and don't forget the classic Star Ferry that plies the harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. (B)

Day 9  Free day until your flight back to the UK departing in the evening (B)
