Guiyang - Kaili - Zhaoxing - Sanjiang - Guilin

An exciting tour itinerary that covers the southern provinces of Guizhou and Guangxi, home to many of China's distinctive ethnic minorities, including the Miao and Dong, who have their own customs and colourful costumes. Also visit the impressive rice terraces of the Dragon's Backbone at Longji.



Day 1  Arrive Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province.

Day 2  Travel by road to Kaili, the centre of the Miao ethnic minority in Guizhou. Visit the Kaili Museum for a feel of the culture behind the different ethnic groups. In the afternoon visit Wangba Geija people village for an insight into their traditional methods of making batik. Stay at Heaven-sent Dragon Hotel (4 star) in Kaili. (B, L)

Day 3  Excursion to Qianman short-skirt Miao village to experience local life. Then travel to Shiqiao to see traditional methods of paper-making. Then visit Jiadao long-skirt Miao village and witness local spinning and weaving techniques before a short hike from Shuidian to Paika to see a fine example of a waterwheel typical of Miao irrigation systems. Also visit a family noted for making lusheng - the Miao traditional pipe. (B, L)

Day 4  Travel to 3 hours by road eastwards to Guizhou province and the town of Zhaoxing, one of the best preserved centres of the Dong ethnic minority. See the distinctive drum towers and wind and rain bridges. Stay at Zhaoxing Hotel (B, L)

Day 5  Exploration of various Dong villages in the surrounding hills, enjoying treks between them in the deep rural countryside. (B, L)

Day 6  Travel by road to Sanjiang, visiting en route Diping wild and rain bridge and the famous wind and rain bridge at Chengyang. Stay at Fengyuqiao Hotel in Sanjiang. (b, L)

Day 7  Travel onward to Longji village, where Zhuang farmers have created spectacular terraces for growing rice on the steep mountainsides. Explore local villages and customs before staying overnight in Ping'an village (simple accommodation). (B, L)

Day 8  Transfer by road to Guilin (2 hours) and transfer to the Guilin Bravo Hotel (4 star). In the afternoon visit the Reed Flute Cave, a huge underground cavern in the limestone hills, followed in the evening by a display of traditional methods of fishing using cormorants. (B, L)

Day 9  Cruise on the Li River to the small riverside town of Yangshuo, past beautiful scenery of limestone peaks and flat rice paddy fields. Browse Yangshuo's shops and market before transfer back to Guilin in afternoon. Also visit the Guilin Tea Research Institute for an insight into the cultivation, processing and consumption of this quintessentially Chinese product. (B, L)
