Train to Tibet

Travel by train on one of the world's most spectacular railways before starting your in depth exploration of Tibet, including Lhasa, Shigatze and Gyangtze, before travelling to Mt Everest Base Camp for a unique view at the world's highest mountain peak.



Day 1  Arrive Chengdu. Transfer to railway station for departure of the train to Lhasa in the evening.

Day 2   The Qinghai-Tibet railway, is the world's highest railway and a feat of engineering. The journey takes 44 hours travelling across the sparse landscape of the Qinghai/Tibet plateau. Overnight on train (sharing 4-berth 'soft sleeper' compartment)

Day 3  On train until arrive Lhasa late afternoon. Met on arrival and transfer to hotel.

Day 4  In the morning visit the imposing Potala Palace that dominates the city, the former centre of power of the Dalai Lamas. After lunch visit the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual centre of Tibetan Buddhism and the surrounding streets of Barkhor Square (B, L)

Day 5  Drive from Lhasa to Gyangtze, passing Yamdrok Lake, one of the four holy lakes of Tibet. On arrival at Gyangtze visit the Pelkor Temple (B, L)

Day 6  Drive to Shegar via Shigatze (6 hour journey) (B, L, D)

Day 7  Drive from Shegar to Everest Base Camp, with view of the peaks of the Himalayas en route. Overnight at base camp in a 'tent guesthouse'. (B, L, D)

Day 8  Drive to Shigatze, Tibet's second largest city. Visit the Tashilumpo Monastery, the spiritual home of the Panchen Lama (B, L)

Day 9  Today we drive to Namtso Lake, one of the four famous holy lakes in Tibet. Fed by thawed snow from the surrounding mountain ranges the lake appears a vivid shade of turquoise blue, and there are magnificent views of the nearby mountains. Overnight at local guesthouse. (B, L, D)

Day 10  Drive back to Lhasa and rest of the day free (B)

Day 11  Transfer to airport for exit (B)
